One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. It is the second leading cause of death among women, claiming the lives of more than 40,000 women in the U.S. alone each year. Although we have developed better ways to detect and treat the disease, doctors still do not know the exact cause of breast cancer and why one woman develops it and the next one doesn't.
