Reflect, Reset, & Renew: Revisiting Your New Year's Resolutions

Reflect, Reset, & Renew: Revisiting Your New Year's Resolutions

If you’re like me, you may have spent an hour or two setting intentions or goals for yourself back in January. I have a ritual of picking three healing cards from my favorite deck, and those three words become my guiding words for the year. I look back at intentions I set the previous year, think about the ones I want to carry over (practicing yoga for at least 10 minutes a day), and set new ones (do one thing a month that scares me in 2019).

I write my intentions down on a piece of paper at the beginning of the year, and post it on the side of my fridge. In January I look at the paper often, then in February a little less, and by April or May, I’m lucky if I skim it once a month. I spend so much time creating and setting intentions, but quickly forget what it is that I’m aiming for after only a few months.

So, here I am, a few days into July, halfway through 2019, and I’ve all but forgotten most of the intentions I set for myself! Sound familiar?!

If so, I want to offer you the idea of setting aside a few minutes this month to reflect on the first half of 2019. Why? Because there is still so much time left of this year. Because I oftentimes think I’m off-track and nowhere near my intention of setting aside one hour a week for self-care, but then, upon reflection, I realize I’m actually right on track.

If you wrote down your intentions for the year way back in January, now is the time to go back and revisit them. Find a quiet space, and set aside 10 or 15 minutes to sit quietly and reflect on all or some of the following questions.

Ask yourself the following questions:

1. How do I feel right now, in this moment?
2. Does this align with how I hoped I'd feel at this point in the year? Why or why not?
3. Which of my intentions have I accomplished, seen through, or implemented so far this year?
4. Where and on what do I want to focus for the rest of the year and HOW will I get there? (Think about how you want to feel, what you want to make space for, recommit to, etc...)
5. How do I want to show up, for myself and others, for the rest of the year? Why?

Let this be an organic process, and see what comes up for you as you take time to reflect, reset, and renew at the halfway point of this year.

Now is the time to create a road map for the rest of your year. All is not lost. Maybe you realize that your priorities have changed, that you've accomplished far more than you had thought, or that you're exactly where you want to be. Maybe you want to reset your intentions to align with where you are right now. Maybe, like me, you realize that the guiding words you chose from your healing card deck back in January—breakthrough, balance, and altitude -- have actually been guiding you through the year all along, despite your not being aware of it for the last few months.

Wherever you are, whatever you're feeling, know that it's exactly where you are supposed to be. Let your experiences over the first half of this year inform the second half of your 2019. It’s not too late to reflect, reset, and renew.
